In Memoriam -- Wilbur

Wilbur

1994 - April 2008

It was with great sadness that we said good-bye to Wilbur.  I first met him and his owner at the Dachshund Rescue National Picnic.  Wilbur told me all about his life as a companion to a trucker who drove a big rig all over the southern United States.  His name was originally Jackson as the trucker found him as a wee puppy in a cardboard box in Jackson, Mississippi.  It all made sense to his current owner as Wilbur loved gas stations and motel rooms and seemed right at home in both places.  By the end of his life, Wilbur was deaf and blind, but he hung on as if waiting for something.  It turned out that he was--the birth of a baby boy to his owner.  Now Wilbur could "go home."  His job was complete.  Little baby Daniel seems to smile at something up near the ceiling.  It is Wilbur in his new job as guardian angel.  Bless you, Wilbur, and thank you for all the joy you brought to those who love you.
